Married at this Very Moment
Gone are the days when friends and relatives received marriage announcements weeks after the big event. Thanks to iPhones, Twitter, and Facebook, the newly betrothed can spread the word instantly. That's become not norm. However, when the groom goes out of his way to digitally alert the masses that he's now a married man (while standing at the altar, mind you), folks tend to take notice.
Dana Hanna took digital geekery to a whole new level when he retrieved his PDA from his pocket and changed his relationship status on Facebook in front of his shocked bride and closest friends. After being pronounced husband and wife by the officiant, Mr. Hanna delayed kissing his bride and instead pulled out what appeared to be a Blackberry. Then, as quickly as his thumbs could manage, he updated his status, and sent out a tweet that said "Standing at the altar with @TracyPage where just a second ago, she became my wife! Gotta go, time to kiss my bride!"
One can only assume (and hope) that Mr. Hanna meant it as kind of a joke. The blogosphere looks to be giving him the benefit of the doubt. The clip itself, available on popular sites like YouTube and Yahoo! Video, has become a Web sensation. You can sign up to receive tweets from Mr. Hanna here. You know, just in case you want to be informed the moment his first child is born.
Below, an AP video of the unusual ceremony...
What Was That Ring Around the Moon?
Many folks who looked up at the sky last night were greeted with a very bizarre sight: a luminous ring surrounding the moon. Were aliens coming? Was the end of the world at hand? Fortunately, no.
Though it looked ominous, the shiny ring around the moon last night was actually a rather common weather phenomenon. According to various weather-related blogs across the Buzz, this ring around the moon occurs when thin cirrus clouds, which contain ice crystals, refract the moonlight. A blog from the Goddard Space Flight Center explains that "the shape of the ice crystals results in a focusing of the light into a ring. Since the ice crystals typically have the same shape, namely a hexagonal shape, the Moon ring is always the same size."
Of course, in the moment, many sky watchers didn't know what the heck was going on, and the resulting avalanche of Web searches reflects their confusion. Queries on "ring around the moon," "why is there a ring around the moon," and "ring around moon pictures" all soared into the stratosphere. A news station in Cincinnati reported that they received calls from curious watchers.
Some folks say that if you count the number of stars within the ring, it'll let you know how many days until the next snowfall. Space.com doesn't confirm that tall tale, but it does explain that a ring around the moon in warm-weather months "usually foretells...a long, slow rain [that] should eventually arrive in about 12 to 18 hours."
But hey, even if nothing happens afterward, a ring around the moon is still cool to look at any time of the year.
Tiger Watch: Who's Who?
Call it the crash heard 'round the world. Tiger Woods' car accident has led to many stunning revelations and a lot of rumors that won't go away. The golf legend has made his mea culpa — for the rest of the story and gossip tidbits, people are looking online. Below, we take a look at some of the drama's key players in Yahoo! Search and their rumored roles.
Elin Nordegren
The wife of Tiger Woods has been thrust into the Search spotlight over the past week. While no stranger to gawkers (she was once a model, after all), this level of Search attention has elevated Ms. Nordegren to a whole new level of public scrutiny. Over the past week, Web lookups have soared an astounding 2,832%. Additionally, related Searches on "elin nordegren pictures" spiked to new heights. She has yet to release an official statement on the sordid affair.
Jaimee Grubbs
In Tiger's boilerplate apology statement, he mentions "transgressions" that have let his family down. Though Tiger hasn't named names, Jaimee Grubbs has more than volunteered to explain her part in the troublesome situation. A Los Angeles cocktail waitress and former participant on the VH1 reality show "Tool Academy," Ms. Grubbs claims to have had a lengthy affair with Woods. Additionally, she has gone on record as saying she has pictures, hundreds of risqué text messages, and even a "frantic voicemail" from the married golfer. Searches on "jaimee grubbs" and "jaimee grubbs photos" have both shot up from zip into the tens of thousands overnight. Last word: Claims to have had affair.
Rachel Uchitel
In contrast to Ms. Grubbs, Rachel Uchitel has strenuously denied the allegations that she and the world's best golfer have hooked up. Still, that hasn't stopped the Searches. Lookups on "rachel uchitel" and "who is rachel uchitel" have both rocked the Search box, as curious searchers seem unwilling to take her at her word. Time magazine has an interesting article on Ms. Uchitel. The 34-year-old nightclub promoter is reportedly "aggressive" when it comes to meeting celebrities (her mom claims she once dated Derek Jeter and A-Rod). However, in an exclusive interview with the New York Post, Uchitel has denied the allegations of a romance with Woods, even going so far as to offer to take a lie detector test. Last word: Denies affair.
Kalika Moquin
Lastly (or not?), there's Kalika Moquin. A relative newcomer to the Tiger watch, Ms. Moquin was named in Life & Style magazine as having romantic links to Tiger. As soon as that possible connection hit the Web, searches on Moquin roared into breakout status. Though her connection to Tiger is still just a rumor, folks clearly want to know more about her. Life & Style explains that she works as a marketing manager at a Las Vegas nightclub. According to the magazine, when Moquin was asked about an alleged affair, she neither confirmed not denied it, saying, "It's not appropriate for me to comment one way or the other." Last word: No comment.
Shatner, Obama, Charlie Brown: What's the Buzz
Our top picks from the day's hottest searches.
- William Shatner (Searches increased by 2,333%). The original "Star Trek" icon says he is sick of all the feuds.
- Obama speech (+819%). The president laid out his plan for the war in Afghanistan.
- COBRA subsidy extension (+448%). Millions of unemployed workers face the end of the 9-month health care subsidy. Legislation is in the works to pass an extension.
- Ring around the moon (+221%). Cold weather caused a cool halo effect around the moon.
- "Charlie Brown Christmas" (+113%). Sorry, Charlie. The classic TV special aired at the same time as Obama's speech. But hey, there's always DVD.
Stealing from Ricky Gervais
This just in: Comedian Ricky Gervais, co-creator and star of the UK's "The Office," was once the victim of an attempted identity theft. Luckily for Mr. Gervais, the fraud was rather easy for authorities to spot.
WalletPop explains how the foolish caper went down several years ago. Thieves, with the help of a bank insider, managed to steal some of Mr. Gervais's identification. The goal was to use his details to buy $328,000 worth of gold from his account, and then pick it up from the bank with a fake passport.
The whole thing went south when the thieves entered the bank to pick up the loot. They had put together a fake passport of Mr. Gervais, only instead of using a real photograph, they had simply cut out a photo of Gervais from "The Office" DVD set. The result was less than convincing to bank officials, who promptly called the authorities.
The incident wasn't widely reported when it occurred, but Gervais is now ready to share the details of the dunderheaded plot on an upcoming podcast. Crime doesn't pay. But it's especially tough for crooks who are soft in the head.
